Sex Symbols Through The Years
Through the years the qualifications and expectations a woman or man had to have to be considered a Sex Symbol changed dramatically. There was a time where Norma Jeane Mortenson, more popularly known as Marilyn Monroe was considered a Sex Symbol for merely being absolutely gorgeous. Rebel Without a Cause’s James Dean pulled off the tragic-rebel look well enough to be every girl and woman’s favorite Sex Symbol in the 50’s, along with Marilyn. The same goes for Jane Russell, Marlene Dietrich, and Dolores Del Rio. The 50’s were all about looks, personality, and popularity. A lot of individuals smoked, and if one did not smoke, people looked at them funny. So apparently if you were hot and you smoked, you were the perfect Sex Symbol candidate. Now, smokers are looked at as trashy and with an odor. Oh how times have changed.
In later years, Farrah Fawcett and John F. Kennedy had everyone mesmerized. Farrah was not only beautiful, but her hair alone was famous in itself. Her 1976 poster in a red hot one-piece showing much more skin than earlier years threw everyone over the edge. Her hair, her pearly whites, and her body in that red one-piece had sold over 12 million copies. Before John F. Kennedy’s assassination he was an inspiring political figure for most Americans. John’s youthful looks had every woman drooling, and every man desirous. In the 70’s a more lenient, casual sex appeal is what you had to have to be considered a Sex Symbol, including a gorgeous smile.
In the early 2000’s is where it all started to change. Musicians and artists became the face of magazines and newspaper articles quite more frequently than actors and big cats. As the value of the term Sex Symbol became less prominent, so did the clothing women and men wore. What was once modest and presentable in what clothing was worn, soon became prude and boring. Apparently, the more revealing, the better. Musicians like Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Britney Spears, Ciara, and Jessica Simpson started wearing less and going out more. Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson wore the tiniest daisy dukes that had every man drooling out of their mouth. Just by looking at the covers of certain magazines and blog post you can tell the way Sex Symbols were changing. Before the title was all about looks, then at this point it changed to how you look in what you wear.
At the time, Shakira was best known for her fast hips, her sexy dance moves, and the tight clothes she wore. Jennifer Lopez was best known for her curves, her energy, and how her bottom looked in the little bit of clothes that she did wear. Even her nickname was “La Guitarra” because her body curved like a guitar. Both ladies were on FHM’s “100 Sexiest Women in the World” list, but each at different years. What was once modest was no hips. Long ago, any woman with curves was ashamed of her body, and put more articles of clothing on to hide what she had, and the people around her would then pin her as fat. JLo, Shakira, and many more woman broke the curve barrier when they start showing off what they had.
In closer to recent years magazines straight off of the shelf are now mildly pornographic compared to what used to be. Now, it’s not a shocker to see a half or fully-naked socialite on paper. At one point a small figure, a tiny waist, a tight bottom, and a small chest was every man’s obsession and every woman’s goal. Now, it’s an extremely large bottom, with a huge, exposed chest. Men such as Taylor Lautner, Ryan Reynolds, Chris Evans, Matt Damon, Matthew McConaughey, and Nick Jonas seem to make a lot of their money and following from the jobs they have done shirtless or with undergarments tight enough to show a perfectly imprinted groin. What used to be sexy was a man fashionably dressed in a complete outfit, but now will have every woman screaming “Take it off!” Even the actors and actresses in movies and commercials are now completely exposed compared to the unostentatious clothing women wore in shows like I Love Lucy and The Golden Girls. The men in the same shows would faithfully wear a suit over their ordinary figure. Now, the actors in recent year movies are shirtless, ripped, and bulge-pulsing.
Today’s sex symbols include the Kardashians, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Amber Rose, Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, and more. Those are just the few on the list, and it’s apparent they are most popular more so for their appearance than the talent showcased. Specifically, Rihanna and Kim have broken the internet several times due to their daring shoots that left the world speechless. What was once was only accepted in the privacy of their own home with only the eyes of their spouse to see is now viewed by the billions of individuals.
